Hello, my name is Pamela Sepa, and I'm going to talk to you about education in Finland and the changes that can be implemented in Ecuador.
Education in Finland is considered one of the best in the world. It is based on equality, free access to quality education, and a strong focus on student well-being. Finnish schools have a relaxed atmosphere, and students have less homework and testing, which helps reduce stress and improves learning. Its learning system is highly versatile and educational for students. Teachers manage their curriculum and use the necessary technology. Students also work in a business run by JAVA students, where they sell desserts. Students have access to free school lunches, books, and field trips. The school is also equipped with recreational areas for students.
- What do you think about education in Finland?
I think the Finnish education system is very impressive. It shows that focusing on creativity, critical thinking, and emotional development can lead to better academic results. I admire how they value teachers and trust them to make important decisions in the classroom. For cold days, there's a room where children can play ping pong, reading corners, rooms for snow days, and even a corner where they can play PlayStation. Education is 100% free so everyone can have equal opportunities. Tests are given regularly to provide feedback on what they've learned. The math teacher speaks five languages and has postgraduate degrees. She teaches math, chemistry, and psychology. Teaching is one of the most sought-after careers in Finland.
-If you could make one change in education in Ecuador based on what you learned about Finland, what would you change first?
If I could, I would adopt several Finnish practices in Ecuador, such as giving more autonomy to teachers, reducing the number of standardized tests, and providing more support for students’ mental health. I would also promote equal access to education in rural and urban areas.
In conclusion, Finland’s education system offers valuable lessons. By adopting some of its key elements, Ecuador could improve its schools and offer a more inclusive, effective, and student-centered education.
