Childhood obesity and its comorbidities are major risk factors for chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Its prevalence has risen sharply worldwide, especially in low- and middle-income countries facing both undernutrition and obesity. Despite global recognition, no region has successfully curbed the rise. The COVID-19 pandemic worsened the trend, especially among children with severe obesity. This review explores recent advances in understanding cardiovascular disease in obese youth, the role of social and ecological factors, and highlights new nutritional and behavioral interventions, while calling for innovative strategies to tackle the dual burden of undernutrition and obesity.
