I have a very similar strategy because, for me, it is essential to write down the important ideas as support for later elaborating my response, so I won’t hesitate during the speaking part. As you mentioned, understanding the idea behind the audio or what the teacher says is essential to perform well in the speaking task. The phrases you mentioned are also really useful.
