QUESTIONS:
1) Describe the key components of an effective medical interview. What specific skills are essential for establishing rapport with the patient and ensuring accurate information gathering?

An effective medical interview consists of several key components: establishing rapport, gathering comprehensive medical history, active listening, and ensuring patient understanding. Essential skills include empathy, open-ended questioning, non-verbal communication (such as maintaining eye contact and using appropriate gestures), and summarizing the patient's concerns to confirm understanding. Building trust and ensuring confidentiality are also crucial for a successful interview.

2) Consider a scenario where a patient is reluctant to share personal health information. What strategies would you employ during the interview to encourage openness and facilitate effective communication?

To encourage a reluctant patient to share information, I would use strategies such as expressing empathy, ensuring a non-judgmental attitude, and explaining the importance of sharing accurate health information. Active listening and reassurance can help build trust. Using open-ended questions, allowing the patient to speak without interruptions, and validating their concerns can also encourage openness. Additionally, I would emphasize confidentiality and the benefits of honest communication for proper diagnosis and treatment.

PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
QUESTIONS:
3) Describe the significance of auscultation during a physical examination. What specific techniques should be used when auscultating the heart and lungs, and what key findings would you listen for?

Auscultation is a crucial component of the physical examination, used to assess heart and lung sounds for abnormalities. When auscultating the heart, I would listen for heart rate, rhythm, and the presence of murmurs, clicks, or gallops at specific points. For the lungs, I would check for normal breath sounds and identify any wheezing, crackles, or decreased breath sounds, which could indicate conditions like asthma, pneumonia, or pleural effusion.

4) Explain the importance of inspecting the skin during a physical examination. What specific signs or abnormalities should you look for, and how might these findings guide your differential diagnosis?

Inspecting the skin is essential as it can reveal underlying systemic conditions. I would look for abnormalities such as pallor, cyanosis, jaundice, rashes, lesions, or ulcerations. For example, jaundice may suggest liver disease, cyanosis could indicate respiratory or cardiovascular issues, and petechiae or ecchymoses might signal a bleeding disorder. Evaluating skin turgor and hydration status can also provide insights into a patient’s overall health. These findings help narrow the differential diagnosis and guide further diagnostic testing.
